Milan, Motorsport, and the P Zero

Pirelli was founded in Milan in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli, and it's the brand most closely tied to high-performance cars. It has been the sole tire supplier to Formula 1 since 2011, and its P Zero family is fitted at the factory on a long list of sports and luxury cars. That racing work feeds directly into its road tires, especially in compound development and high-speed stability.

Not Just for Supercars

Pirelli makes plenty of everyday tires too. The Cinturato family covers touring tires for sedans and crossovers, the Scorpion family covers SUVs and light trucks — including all-season, all-terrain, and all-weather versions — and Pirelli's winter lines, such as Ice Zero and Winter Sottozero, cover cold-weather driving.

One thing worth knowing if you drive a premium European car: Pirelli marks tires developed specifically with a carmaker using codes on the sidewall — a star for BMW, "MO" for Mercedes-Benz, "AO" for Audi, and "N" ratings for Porsche, among others. Those tires are tuned to that vehicle's suspension, and some owners prefer to stick with the marked version when replacing them. Pirelli Through an Ontario Winter

Many performance cars arrive on Pirelli summer tires, and those are not built for Canadian winters — below about 7°C, a summer compound hardens and loses grip quickly, and it can even be damaged by very cold temperatures. If your car came on P Zero summer tires, plan for a dedicated winter set for the colder months. Pirelli's winter lines are a natural fit if you'd like to keep the same brand on the car all year round.
