Tire Installation vs. Changeover: What Affects the Cost in Ontario

The Short Answer

There's no single price for tire installation or a seasonal changeover, because the work depends on your vehicle and your wheels. The biggest factor is whether your tires are already mounted on their own rims. A changeover with tires on rims is a wheel swap. Installing tires onto rims — new tires, or seasonal tires that share one set of rims — means a full mount and balance on every wheel, which takes longer and costs more. Rim size and vehicle type then move the price from there.

At Terron Tire, we quote installation and changeovers based on your vehicle and rim size. Contact us with your vehicle's year, make and model and your tire size for an accurate price.

Installation vs. Changeover: What’s the Difference?

  • Tire installation means mounting tires onto rims: the old tire comes off the wheel, the new one is mounted and seated, the wheel is balanced, and it goes back on the vehicle. This is what happens with new tires, and with seasonal tires that share one set of rims.
  • A changeover means swapping between your seasonal sets. If each set is on its own rims, it's a wheel swap — the wheels come off and the other set goes on, torqued to spec. If both sets share one set of rims, a changeover is really four tire installations.

What Affects the Price

  • Tires on rims or not. A wheel swap is far less work than dismounting and mounting four tires and balancing four wheels.
  • Rim size. Larger-diameter wheels and low-profile tires take more care and time to mount without damage.
  • Vehicle type. SUVs, pickup trucks and vans often have larger, heavier wheel and tire packages than a compact car.
  • Tire pressure sensors (TPMS). Vehicles with direct TPMS need the sensors handled carefully, and may need a valve reseal or a reset.
  • Number of tires. Mounting and balancing two tires is less work than four.

Where the tires came from doesn't change our price. Installation pricing is based on your vehicle, not whether you bought the tires from us.

What’s Included When We Mount and Balance

  • Professional mounting and computer balancing
  • A new valve stem, or a TPMS reseal on sensor-equipped wheels
  • Disposal and recycling of your old tires
  • Lug nuts torqued to spec with a calibrated tool, not an impact gun

Balancing is part of every mount, because a new or remounted tire is never perfectly balanced on its own. If you're curious about what goes into it, read How Much Does Wheel Balancing Cost?.

How Long It Takes

Most four-tire installation and balancing appointments at our shop are done in under an hour. A wheel swap is quicker than that. Add a TPMS reset or extra inspection work and plan for a little longer — we'll give you a realistic estimate when you book. In the fall rush, the wait for an appointment is usually longer than the work itself, so book early.

How to Save on Changeovers

The biggest long-term saving is putting your winter tires on their own rims, which turns every future changeover into a quicker wheel swap — see Winter Tires on Separate Rims: Is It Worth It?. Rotating your tires at changeover time also helps them wear evenly and last longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. With tires already on rims, the changeover is a wheel swap. Without rims, each tire has to be dismounted, mounted and balanced, which is more work.

Yes. Every newly mounted tire needs balancing, because small weight differences in the tire and wheel cause vibration at highway speed. Balancing is included when we mount tires.

Yes. We install tires purchased elsewhere, and our installation pricing is based on your vehicle, not where the tires came from.

Contact us with your vehicle's year, make and model and your tire size (printed on the tire sidewall), and tell us whether your seasonal tires are on their own rims.
